چکیده

Study was conducted to elucidate the nitrite-dependent nitric oxide (NO) production by wheat roots grown in hydroponics under cadmium (Cd) stress. In a long-term Cd exposure experiment, plants were grown for 4 weeks under 1 μM Cd. The root Cd concentration in the Cd-stressed plants was 2.5 mM compared to 0.1 mM in the untreated plants. Most of the Cd taken up by plants was restricted to roots where its concentration was 9 times higher than that in shoots. Despite the high Cd concentration in roots and shoots, the plant growth was not affected. However, Cd stress caused a 1.7-fold decrease in the root respiration, whereas it produced a 2.4-fold increase in NO emission (detected by gas phase chemiluminescence). In a short-term Cd exposure experiment, freshly harvested Cd-free roots were exposed to 10 μM Cd for 3 h. Here also, the root respiration decreased by 42% and NO production increased by 73%, thus confirming the stimulatory effect of Cd stress on NO production by wheat roots.

Nuclear Accumulation of Cytosolic Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase in Cadmium-Stressed Arabidopsis Roots1[C][W]

NAD-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is a ubiquitous enzyme involved in the glycolytic pathway. It has been widely demonstrated that mammalian GAPDH, in addition to its role in glycolysis, fulfills alternative functions mainly linked to its susceptibility to oxidative posttranslational modifications. Here, we investigated the responses of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thali...

Exogenous Nitric Oxide (NO) Interferes with Lead (Pb)-Induced Toxicity by Detoxifying Reactive Oxygen Species in Hydroponically Grown Wheat (Triticum aestivum) Roots

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a bioactive signaling molecule that mediates a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses. The present study investigated the role of NO (as SNP [sodium nitroprusside]) in ameliorating lead (Pb)-toxicity in Triticum aestivum (wheat) roots. Pb (50 and 250 μM) alone and in combination with SNP (100 μM) was given to hydroponically grown wheat roots for a period of 0-8 h. NO supple...

Nitric oxide alleviates oxidative damage induced by high temperature stress in wheat.

Effect of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a donor of nitric oxide (NO) was examined in two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, C 306 (heat tolerant) and PBW 550 (comparatively heat susceptible) to study the extent of oxidative injury and activities of antioxidant enzyme in relation to high temperature (HT) stress. HT stress resulted in a marked decrease in membrane thermostability (MTS) and 2, ...

The effect of silicon on reducing oxidative damage caused by cadmium in wheat in hydroponic conditions

Abstract: The use of silicon has been considered as an effective strategy in reduce of cd uptake and affecting the oxidative damage caused by cd toxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the presence silicon (0.1 mM/L) and different levels of cadmium (0.10, 50 μmol/L) in wheat plants under hydroponic conditions. The results showed that increasing the concentration of cd...
